Key Institutional Takeaways — Sovereign credit

  • Reuters reported the French 10-year at 5.0160% at the cash close, after it had crossed 5% during the week for the first time since the summer of 2002.
  • Dow Jones reported a deficit near 5.4% of GDP, against an EU reference of 3%, and said France has not balanced a budget since 1974.
  • The German 10-year finished at 3.3426% and the Italian 10-year at 4.5784%, so Friday’s close left a wide French premium already on the page.

Frequently Asked Questions — Sovereign credit

Is 5.0160% a live quote?

It is Reuters’ cash close for Friday, published in the European closing report. It is not a Monday indication.

Does a deficit of 5.4% of GDP mean the rating must fall?

No. Dow Jones reported that deficit figure and also reported that Moody’s could leave Aa3 unchanged. Nomura’s expectation of a cut to A1 was an analyst view in that story, not a rule.

What else on the European fiscal calendar is already dated?

Reuters said the ECB meets next week and is expected to hold, after raising rates in June and September, and that UK finance minister John Healey presents a budget on Wednesday. Italy’s 2027–2029 budget is also due next week; Reuters said sources had talked about heavier taxes on energy companies. That last item is source-reported, not enacted law.
