French 10-year closes at 5.0160%, with Moody’s still unread
The French cash 10-year finished Friday at 5.0160%, down 7.4 basis points and still above 5%. Moody’s review was scheduled for later that evening. The yield is known. The rating action, in this entry, is not.
Filed Saturday 24 October 2026. Europe’s cash bond session is the completed fact. The rating decision that was scheduled for Friday evening is not filled in from guesswork.
The close#
Reuters reported the French 10-year yield down 7.4 basis points at 5.0160%. The same closing report said the yield had gone through 5% during the week for the first time since the summer of 2002, and that the weekly increase was the largest among the main euro-area countries. Friday’s decline did not put the yield back under 5%. A one-day rally inside a week that broke a 24-year level is still a week that broke that level.
The comparators in the same file: the German 10-year almost unchanged at 3.3426%, the Italian 10-year down 3.4 basis points at 4.5784%. Reuters described the French premium over Germany as the highest since the 2011 sovereign-debt crisis. Using 5.0160 minus 3.3426 gives a rough 167 basis points. That subtraction is arithmetic on two Reuters closes. It is not a statement that Reuters published “167”. Intraday highs for the spread can be wider than the closing gap, so this entry does not promote the subtraction to “the high of the week”.
Equities closed with the bond, not instead of it. The CAC 40 fell 0.36% to 7,782.82 and 2.19% on the week. The Stoxx 600 fell 0.42% and 1.50% on the week. A sovereign yield can be the story while the stock index looks like an ordinary down day.
The fiscal figures, labelled as reported#
Dow Jones reported that the deficit was getting near 5.4% of GDP, wider than the EU’s 3% reference and wider than other countries in the bloc, and that France had not run a balanced budget since 1974. It reported that the 2027 budget had not been passed. It reported Moody’s at Aa3 since December 2024, outlook negative since October 2025, with a decision due after the US close and no obligation to change the rating.
Nomura, via Dow Jones, expected A1 with a stable outlook. That expectation cited the primary deficit and the politics of cutting it. Spectra Markets, via the same piece, framed an unchanged Aa3 or a two-notch cut as the surprises. Recording the preview is fair. Recording it as the result is not.
The next public dates#
Reuters said the ECB is expected to leave rates unchanged next week, after raising them in June and September, and that Lagarde will be heard both on the economy and on whether French bonds are becoming a stability problem. The same report said UK finance minister John Healey presents his first budget on Wednesday. On Italy, Reuters said people familiar with the matter had indicated the government could lean on energy-company taxes to help fund tax cuts and spending in a 2027–2029 budget due next week. “People familiar” means the policy was not, in that sentence, a published statute.
Saturday’s demonstrations were part of Reuters’ political scene-setting, following a week of unrest. They are context for why the budget path is hard to read. They are not a fiscal number.
The entry stops at the closed yield, the reported deficit, the old rating, and an empty cell for the new one.

Frequently asked questions
Is 5.0160% a live quote?
It is Reuters’ cash close for Friday, published in the European closing report. It is not a Monday indication.
Does a deficit of 5.4% of GDP mean the rating must fall?
No. Dow Jones reported that deficit figure and also reported that Moody’s could leave Aa3 unchanged. Nomura’s expectation of a cut to A1 was an analyst view in that story, not a rule.
What else on the European fiscal calendar is already dated?
Reuters said the ECB meets next week and is expected to hold, after raising rates in June and September, and that UK finance minister John Healey presents a budget on Wednesday. Italy’s 2027–2029 budget is also due next week; Reuters said sources had talked about heavier taxes on energy companies. That last item is source-reported, not enacted law.
